How to Check the Oil Level in a Car – Step by Step

How to Check Car Oil

1. Make sure the car is off and the engine has had enough time to cool down.
2. Open the hood, and locate the dipstick.
3. Pull out the dipstick, and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
4. Stick the dipstick back in all the way.
5. Pull out the dipstick again, and examine the tip.
6. The oil should reach from the end of the tip of the dipstick to the top of the crosshatched area. Some dipsticks have a line with some arrows instead of crosshatching. There should be an indication of where oil levels should be at, though.
7. If the oil does not reach the crosshatched area, you might think you should add some oil to your engine, but we’d recommend swinging by our service center. Oil isn’t like gasoline, you shouldn’t need to refil it regularly unless something is wrong.

How Often Should You Check Your Oil?

No guide on how to check the oil level in a Nissan or any other make of car would be complete without mentioning how often to check it. Most experts recommend checking your oil once every month or so. It never hurts to check it more often, though. Maybe set yourself a reminder after filling up on gas to check your oil when you get home and the engine has had some time to cool down. It’s also a good idea to check your oil before going on a long trip.
